«The year of the salamander seems to be 2022, at least for this collective of thirsty musicians.
On September 4, 2022 Salamandra will debut with a quintet, specially prepared for FEIA, Lisbon diy fair.
I received news of this recording the same day it was made, it arrived in my mailbox without a sender and was playing during my night sauna session.
I had to write a few words... but few.
Salamandra is gaining a capacity for expression worthy of special cases of mental health. Anything between absolute presence and absence of common sense.
When I listen to Sa La Ma Lek I have the feeling that the quintet tried to create something that could be a logical narrative, but they didn't have the time to develop a common language to build the story... so they ended up using primal sounds, gestures and a some sort indecipherable code to be able to give an order to things, give titles to tracks and prepare a gig...
The result is a version of Salamandra with Tiago Eira on electric guitar, adding textures to Francisco Morato and João Augusto's two basses, Leonel Cardoso's cutting horns and João Sousa's stubborn presence of repetitive rhythms on percussion.
I prefer not to rate this record, you only notice it when you hear it.»
